A ring gauge is a cylindrical ring of a thermally stable material, frequently steel, whose inside diameter is finished to gauge tolerance and is used for checking the outside diameter of a cylindrical object. Air gauges were first developed in France. These air gauges used a simple back-pressure technology and provided the source for the development of almost all air-gauging styles used today. A ir gauging based on a law of physics that states flow and pressure are directly proportionate to clearance and react inversely to each other. Ring gauges are used for comparative gauging and for checking, calibrating, or setting of gauges or other principles. Individual ring gauges or ring gauge sets are made to variety of tolerance grades in metric and English dimensions for masteror working applications.
